I used to blame Phil Spector for these issues, but upon doing additional research, I think it's actually George Harrison that's to blame. The Wall-of-Sound approach prevents any substantial tweaks without screwing with the entire mix.
If you tame the high end, the vocals get buried if you add extra punch in the low end, the whole track becomes boomy as hell. I personally don't even know how you'd fix this album. On the plus side, this is the best presentation of the album I've heard, and it's not the mastering engineer's fault. This 2010 version seems to say 'screw it - the original mix is flawed as hell, and we're doing a faithful presentation of the master tape!'Ĭertain tracks sounds great (My Sweet Lord, Let It Down, All Things Must Pass), while others sounds just as crappy as the other versions (Wah-Wah, Awaiting On You All). All the other masterings of the album seems to attempt to fix issues with the album - add detail to the guitars, reduce the detail in the high end, make the album sound consistent track-to-track, etc. Took a listen, and I'm simultaneously impressed and underwhelmed with this 2010 edition.
